I threw a birthday party for a friend who was turning 60. He loves boats so I had a yacht club type of theme.
I used: dock line (it's a thick rope - I found it on Amazon for about $15), mason jars and a vase, sand, sea shells, pebbles, dried starfish (you can get the mini size at places like Oriental Trading). I used different size mason jars and one large vase with straight sides, about a foot tall.
I filled all the jars and the vase with sand and put white candles into 2 jars and the vase. I added pebbles, shells and starfish to all of them and pushed some of them down against the sides of the jars so you could see them under the sand too.
I wrapped the rope about a third of way up each jar connecting the jars together loosely with enough rope between them so you can spread them out a bit to arrange them. You have to glue (I used hot glue) the spot where you begin to wind the rope around each jar and the place where you finish so it doesn't unravel. After I arranged the jars on the table I placed heavier rope around the base of the jars and the vase, just winding it among them. When I lit the candles it looked beautiful!
